Overview
In 2019, an analytics platform was launched to serve as the centralized hub for developing advanced analytics tools and modernizing investigative processes. The organization was tasked with creating a custom enterprise-level platform that allowed agents and analysts the ability to quickly organize and analyze large amounts of disparate data to support mission-critical and often time-sensitive investigations.
Please Note: The designs and information presented on this page have been generalized and altered to protect sensitive user data and confidential project details. The core design principles and problem-solving approaches remain consistent with the original project.
My Role
Lead UX Designer
I guided the project from initial concept through development and continued iterations over the next few years. My responsibilities included leading stakeholder meetings, creating wireframes and prototypes, facilitating user testing sessions, and evolving the enterprise Design System to establish UX best practices across multiple applications.

Challenge
Investigators faced three critical problems: information overload from massive datasets, fragmented workflows requiring multiple third-party tools, and time-intensive manual processes that delayed cases from reaching prosecution. My team also inherited existing UX patterns from the original product built years before without the aid of a UX Designer. These patterns were found throughout the existing product and was already understood by personnel but it did not follow UX best practices, creating design debt that limited our UI decisions while requiring consistency across the platform.

Strategy & Vision
Our strategy focused on progressive disclosure to combat information overload and intelligent automation to accelerate investigative workflows. We prioritized features by impact and feasibility, creating a phased roadmap (Phase 0-4) that would deliver immediate value while building toward more sophisticated AI/ML capabilities. The vision was to transform investigators from starting cases from scratch to leveraging automated pattern detection across national datasets.

Our Process
Ethnographic interviews to understand current workflows, pain points, and gaps in existing third-party tools
Pain point analysis with team to create feature recommendations
Technical evaluation of recommendations against existing technology to prioritize by impact and feasibility
Phased roadmap creation (Phase 0-4) for implementation timeline
Mockup and prototype development for key features and workflows
User testing sessions with actual agents and analysts to validate design decisions
Wireframe delivery to development team with validated solutions
Design system evolution - established consistency (Phase 0) then systematically improved UX patterns over two years
